Privacy Statement

Introduction
NEHTA is committed to protecting the privacy of any personal information it collects and handles from employees, stakeholders and the wider community in conformity with the National Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

NEHTA is covered by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Spam Act 2003 (Cth).  These acts require NEHTA to collect and handle personal information responsibly.

This privacy policy provides a summary of NEHTA’s approach to information privacy and how it complies with privacy requirements.

Personal information
Personal information is information that identifies, or may reasonably identify, an individual.

Collection
NEHTA does not operate in an environment in which personal information is collected and handled as part of its core business.  However, in conducting its business, NEHTA may collect and handle personal information for a variety of purposes, for example, to respond to a query or to provide information about NEHTA initiatives.

NEHTA only collects personal information that is necessary for the performance of its corporate functions and activities.  This information usually consists of name, address, telephone and/or fax numbers or email addresses.  In some cases, for example NEHTA contractors, it may also include financial and business details.

NEHTA will not collect more information than is necessary and any collection will take place in a lawful and fair manner. Wherever possible, NEHTA will collect information directly from an individual and undertakes to provide relevant information about the ways in which it collects and handles personal information, including through this privacy policy.

If NEHTA contracts with third parties to collect and handle information on NEHTA’s behalf, the contractual arrangements will automatically include appropriate privacy protection.

In the case of information collected through the NEHTA website, cookies may be used. A cookie is a very small text file which is stored on an individual's computer hard drive when they first visit the NEHTA website. When they come back to the NEHTA website, it will register that someone using the same browser on which the cookie is stored has returned. Cookies help to improve NEHTA's website and monitor Internet traffic.

NEHTA only collects personal information through the NEHTA website when an individual has chosen to provide it, e.g. to request further information about a NEHTA initiative. The personal information collected may include name and relevant contact details, such as an email address, and any other information NEHTA requires to respond appropriately.

Use and disclosure

NEHTA will use and disclose personal information for the primary purpose of collection.  For example, to respond to a query, to provide information about a NEHTA initiative or to make a payment.
NEHTA may from time to time use personal information to contact individuals on matters that may be of interest to them, for example to advise of a new NEHTA publication or initiative.  Individuals will be provided with an opportunity to opt out of receiving such communications in future.
In the case of email distribution lists, individuals will always be given the opportunity to opt out of any further email contact with NEHTA.
Otherwise, NEHTA will only use/disclose personal information for a secondary purpose where it would reasonably be expected, or with consent or where required or authorised by law.
NEHTA does not provide personal information to third parties for commercial or other unrelated purposes.

Security
NEHTA is committed to holding personal information securely and has appropriate security protocols in place to protect personal information whether it is held electronically or in paper-based format.

The security of any information provided to NEHTA via the internet cannot be assured as the internet is not a secure environment.  Individuals should protect their own personal information appropriately and in accordance with its level of sensitivity.

Access and correction
Individuals have the right to seek access to and/or correction of their own personal information where it is held by NEHTA.  Requests for access and/or correction may be made by email to privacy@nehta.gov.au .

NEHTA may request evidence of identity prior to granting access to and/or correction of personal information.

Sensitive personal information
NEHTA does not usually collect sensitive personal information, as defined in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).  If it does, it will be with the individual’s consent or where required by law.

Complaints
The Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) provides that an individual may complain if he/she believes that a privacy breach has occurred.

NEHTA is committed to respecting the privacy of any personal information it holds and will endeavour to resolve any privacy complaints that may arise.  Individuals should contact NEHTA directly to make a complaint.

Individuals may also complain to the federal Privacy Commissioner. The Commissioner will investigate and, if appropriate, conciliate any privacy complaints.
