NEHTA protects personal information it collects and handles in accordance with the National Privacy Principles (NPPs) contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act). This privacy policy sets out how NEHTA collects and handles personal information.

What is personal information?
Personal information is information or an opinion that identifies an individual, or could reasonably identify an individual.

Why does NEHTA collect and handle personal information?
Like many organisations, NEHTA collects and handles personal information in order to communicate with people and meet its business obligations. NEHTA does not generally collect health information.

How does NEHTA collect personal information?
NEHTA may collect personal information from an individual:

  • by telephone or facsimile;
  • via the NEHTA website (where given voluntarily);
  • by mail or email; or
  • in person.

Wherever possible, NEHTA will collect information directly from an individual. Where NEHTA collects personal information from a third party, it will endeavour to inform the individual to whom the personal information relates about the collection.

Whose personal information does NEHTA collect?
NEHTA may collect personal information about:

  • Individuals who contact NEHTA with an inquiry;
  • Individuals who deal with NEHTA as part of a reference group or as a representative of a stakeholder organisation;
  • NEHTA’s business associates;
  • Goods and services providers (including contractors); and
  • Job applicants.

Employee records are exempt from the operation of the NPPs.

What personal information does NEHTA collect?
The types of personal information that NEHTA may collect include:

  • Name of individual;
  • Name of organisation that individual represents;
  • Job title (if relevant);
  • Contact address;
  • Telephone numbers;
  • Facsimile number;
  • Email address;
  • Resumes and other information provided to NEHTA as part of a job application; and
  • Where necessary, financial details (such as in order to conduct business with contractors).

Does NEHTA collect sensitive personal information?
NEHTA will only collect sensitive information (including health information), as defined by the Privacy Act, with an individual’s consent or where collection is required by law.

Where relevant, NEHTA may collect information about an individual’s membership of a professional association. This will usually occur where an individual represents a professional association in their dealings with NEHTA. If an individual does not wish to provide this information, they will not be required to do so.

How does NEHTA use and disclose personal information?
NEHTA may use the personal information it collects in order to:

  • Respond to enquiries;
  • Provide information to an individual about a NEHTA initiative;
  • Conduct business with its business associates and contractors;
  • Contact an individual regarding matters that it believes will be of interest to them; and/ or
  • Assess a job application and communicate with job applicants.

Individuals who receive an email newsletter or other marketing material from NEHTA, will always be given the opportunity to opt out of further communications of this nature.

NEHTA will only disclose personal information about an individual with that individual’s consent or where disclosure is required or authorised by law. NEHTA does not disclose personal information to third parties for commercial or other unrelated purposes.

Information provided via the Internet
The security of any information provided to NEHTA via the Internet cannot be assured as the Internet is not a secure environment. Individuals should protect their own personal information appropriately.

Does NEHTA use cookies?
Cookies may be used on the NEHTA website. A cookie is a very small text file which is stored on an individual's computer hard drive when they first visit a website. When they return to the website, it will register that someone using the same browser on which the cookie is stored has returned. Cookies help NEHTA to improve its website and monitor Internet traffic.

Access and correction
Individuals have the right to request access to and/or correct the personal information that NEHTA holds about them. If you wish to request access or a correction, please contact NEHTA’s Privacy Team at the address set out below. NEHTA may request evidence of your identity before granting a request for access or correction.
