WHO and IHTSDO strive for harmonisation of health information
22 July 2010. The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) announces a collaborative arrangement with the World Health Organization (WHO) to harmonise WHO classifications and SNOMED CT®*.
WHO classifications are used to capture information on diseases, disability, interventions and other indicators of population health. SNOMED CT is a standardised health terminology that represents clinical concepts in a consistent manner.
When used together appropriately, they make it easier to summarise information from individuals patients’ health records into aggregate results needed for health policy, health services management, and research. The aim is to avoid duplication of effort and reduce cost and to improve speed, consistency, and availability of information.

SNOMED CT®AU is the Australian release of SNOMED CT with additional customised content for the Australian healthcare market. The National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) administers SNOMED CT licensing in Australia on behalf of IHTSDO and makes it available for use within the Australian e-health community.
The way patient clinical information is captured and shared by healthcare providers is vital to improving the quality and safety of healthcare delivery and is fundamental to the success of e-health in Australia.
SNOMED CT-AU releases include relevant components from the SNOMED CT international release; a list (known as a reference set) of the Australian English preferred descriptions; context specific reference sets designed to support the data requirements for NEHTA’s clinical information specifications; documentation explaining the release, contents and implementation; terminology viewers to access the files in Windows and Mac formats.
