NEHTA uploads education resources

24 November, 2008. Australia's medical community can learn about the role of clinical terminology in e-health with a new online resource.

The National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA) has released two educational resources to help promote the benefits of using SNOMED CT.

SNOMED CT Overview and SNOMED CT Basics are now available for the user community to download from the NEHTA website in PowerPoint or video format.

"The purpose of creating this educational material is to effectively raise the level of awareness within the SNOMED CT user community about the many benefits and uses of the application," said David Hislop, general manager, Terminology Services, NEHTA.

SNOMED CT Overview is an 80 minute presentation aimed at people such as policy makers, procurers and government representatives, who will be exposed to SNOMED CT and need to know some general features.

People can expect to receive an overview of SNOMED CT, its history, requirements of use and an outline of its benefits.

SNOMED CT Basics is a more detailed 80 minute presentation aimed at healthcare and service providers, clinical supervisors, practice managers and IT managers; those people who will most likely be using SNOMED CT.

The Basics course follows on from the Overview course and aims to educate people on expressions, description logic as well as the primary and secondary uses of data.

Internationally renowned SNOMED CT expert, Kent Spackman, is the presenter of both presentations.

Spackman is the Chief Terminologist for the International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation, which was formed in 2007 to continue the development and support of SNOMED CT. Spackman's experience with SNOMED CT spans more than a decade. He was instrumental in maintaining SNOMED 3, creating SNOMED RT and merging SNOMED RT with CTV3 to form SNOMED CT.

Both educational resources can be downloaded from the NEHTA web site www.nehta.gov.au
