Australian Medicines Terminology Implementation Plan - Roadmap Survey

In September 2011 NEHTA released the AMT Implementation Plan which sets out a list of key deliverables that are anticipated to increase the adoption of the Australian Medicines Terminology (AMT). One of the key deliverables is a product roadmap that will set out areas of development of the AMT over the next 12 months. To enable us to develop this roadmap we are now seeking input and advice from AMT stakeholders.

Responses to NEHTA’s terminology license holder survey in July 2011 indicate that eleven license holders had implemented AMT in Australia at that time. In some instances, NEHTA has provided support to implementations, and in other cases, implementations have proceeded without direct support from NEHTA. Through our interaction with some implementers and vendors, we have received feedback on changes people would like NEHTA to make to the AMT. We are conscious that our interaction doesn’t span the full range of implementations, so would like to get feedback from a broader group of people on information they would like to see in the AMT.

The AMT is the national terminology to identify medicines used in Australia, using unique codes to deliver unambiguous, accurate and standardised names for both branded (trade) and generic (medicinal) products. The AMT has been developed under principles of a clinical terminology, of which one principle is to represent definitional knowledge of medicines i.e. attributes of a concept must always be necessarily true and related to the concept’s definition. Certain attributes of medicines reflect information about a concept but may not always be necessarily true for all instances (i.e. these are assertional knowledge that do not define essential properties of a concept); these include such things as GTINs, availability, indications, colours, etc. While the AMT provides unique codes and definitional knowledge of medicines to support interoperability it may not provide all the necessary information (assertional knowledge) required to support the implementation of a full electronic medication management system.

Below is a link to a survey we are conducting to gain a further understanding of what additional information should be part of a national medicines terminology (including addition of certain assertional knowledge). We would appreciate you taking 10 - 15 minutes to answer the questions to help guide development of the AMT roadmap.

Please note that this link will open the survey in SurveyMonkey. You do not require a login and password to complete this survey.

To influence the future development of the AMT please complete this survey by Tuesday 24th January 2012. The results of this survey will then be analysed by NEHTA and proceed through the AMT Governance process, which includes guidance from jurisdictions, clinical groups and vendors. Results from this will inform NEHTA’s product roadmap for the AMT.
