Primary Care Sector Plan
With almost one in four Australians visiting a doctor in any two-week period, and more than 137 million visits to general practitioners annually, implementation of healthcare identifiers in primary care is central to reaching a national tipping point in the use of eHealth.
In recognition of this, NEHTA has begun working with the Primary Care Sector including GPs, allied health, community health and specialists to develop a plan for the take up of eHealth, commencing with the identifiers.
The proposed plan will cover the first 24 months of implementation and will focus initially on the parts of the sector which currently involve the greatest exchange of electronic information and which are most likely to undergo the earliest uptake:
- General Practice;
- Allied Health Practices;
- Specialist Practices.
Initially there was consultation with stakeholders from the areas of the sector highlighted above to define the boundaries of the ‘sector’ to be involved at each stage and to identify gaps, linkages and opportunities within and across sectors which may require greater investigation during later phases in the consultation process.
The version of the Primary & Ambulatory Care HI Implementation Plan which was developed in consultation with sector representatives between July and December 2010 (published in February 2011) can be found here.
